Lotería! Grill & Torta Company at FIGat7th | $5 OFF Purchase of $20 or More (exp. 8/31/17)

Lotería! Grill
¡Bienvenidos! When we opened Lotería! Grill in 2002, I wanted to do two things; showcase the delicious food I grew up loving in Mexico City, and create a place to go on a great date for tacos, just like there is all over Mexico. Our approach was simple: favorite regional celebration foods like Moles, Guisos, and Salsas, slowly cooked, prepared with only the finest and freshest ingredients, with the true techniques of Mexico. Delicious food and gracious hospitality that leaves you with a craving to return. We hope you enjoy your visit with us.         -Jimmy Shaw

Torta Company - Reinventing the Mexican Sandwich
One thing you can be sure of: We know Mexican cuisine—and we’re not afraid to boast about it. Jimmy Shaw—the man behind Los Angeles’s Lotería Grill—loves L.A. and he loves his native Mexico. He also loves tortas, and wanted to make great ones to share with everyone. So he teamed up with his brother Andy with a common goal: provide the city with the best tortas ever.

But there is no great torta without great bread, so they sought out the best bread recipe in the world to create the most delicious, authentic telera ever. From there, Jimmy and Andy put together everything they knew would make an amazing torta, carefully arranging different combinations of ingredients and tasting them to make sure every bite was delicious.

The result? Torta Company: where one bite will make you happy for the rest of the day. ¡Buen provecho!

Valentine’s Day 2014

Mid-February and a GORGEOUS 80 degree-sunny day in LA! Perfect for a lunch break at Grand Park and a neighborhood walk in Downtown LA.IMG_3534The Broad on Grand Avenue - expected to open in mid-2014.

The shiny & shimmery Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by architect Frank Gehry, and celebrating its 10th year anniversary this year.

Grand Park hosted a special Valentine's Day lunchtime concert with DJ Phyz Ed spinning all LOVE tunes. DJ Phyz Ed is a local DTLA DJ and I always enjoy his selections of tunes and he always gets me groovin'!

I'm originally from NYC and most of my family and friends still reside there. My FB feed was full of updates of the snowstorm and frigid weather. Meanwhile, I enjoyed a sunny day in LA in a t-shirt & jeans while my lunch-date, Jessica, of The Fashionistas Blackbook and my partner for Soiree et Style events, was in a tank top & shorts!

On our walk home, we stopped by Big Man Bakes so that I could pick up some cupcakes for J. He LOVES their carrot cake & I also picked up their special Valentine's day Pink Velvet cupcake. Yum!

Then, we popped into one of my favorite shops in the Historic Core of DTLA, Create Your Health Teas, Healing Herbs and Spices, and saw these adorable piggie salt & pepper shakers! They make a perfect little gift and they're just $5! DTLA Rendezvous members save 10% off your entire purchase at CYH Teas when you use your member card! (More DTLA Rendezvous discounts listed here.)

LOVE CYH Teas' new shelves that nicely display their jarred teas, herbs, & spices!

It was a lovely (long) lunch break, but it was back to work when I got home and when my day was done, I went to the gym. Just as I got to the gym, J text me to tell me that he had a surprise for me and "don't make any plans" and if I did to "cancel them."

J booked a 1-night staycation for us at the new The Line Hotel in Koreatown, easily accessible from Downtown LA on the Metro Purple Line to Wilshire/Normandie (just 4 stops from the 7th Street/Metro Center station). What I love about The Line Hotel is the Sydell Group's concept of "sharing, collaborating, and encouraging the creative process to create unique hotels deeply rooted in their location and architecture."

One of their main collaborators is Roy Choi, famous chef and creator of the gourmet Korean taco truck, Kogi, and owner of Chego in Chinatown in DTLA. (Chego's Leafy-T bowl highly recommend for vegetarians). Choi will open eateries Pot and Commissary in the hotel.

Another collaborator at The Line Hotel is Poketo, the husband and wife team that has a brick & mortar shop/gallery in the Arts District of DTLA.

So, even though we were in K-Town, I still felt connected to DTLA. ;D

Good morning from The Line Hotel - room-view facing Wilshire Blvd.
(Foodie tidbit: Boo's Philly Cheesesteaks - delicious, authentic Philly Cheesesteaks - is just up the block in the Brown Derby Plaza. ;D )

We went to the lobby to check-out and leave, and there was complimentary continental breakfast offered to hotel guests! Yay! And yes, another connection to DTLA is that breakfast was by Le Pain Quotidien, which is soon opening a location at the PacMutual later this year!

Hope you liked this blog post, it's been a while since I've written one and felt I had some photos and info to share. Did you find it informative? Did you like it? What would you like to see more of?

Millennium Biltmore Hotel Tree Lighting & Tour | 12.04.13

Wednesday, December 4, 2013. DTLA Rendezvous Premium Members visited the Millennium Biltmore Hotel for Happy Hour, their annual tree lighting ceremony, and a special private tour of the hotel.

Members met at Bugis Street Brasserie, the hotel's Singaporean-Chinese Restaurant, between 5-5:45pm to enjoy their Happy Hour.
Above: Some members had the Roasted Duck Tacos and Chicken & Shrimp Siu Mai as well as the Shrimp Tempura (not in photo). Everyone enjoyed the food they ordered and I personally enjoyed the $3 wine on Happy Hour.
Bugis Street HHBugis Street Brasserie Happy Hour Menu as of 12.04.13.
We then walked over to the Lobby of the hotel to catch their annual tree lighting ceremony and enjoyed some complimentary cookies, hot chocolate, and cider!
We had a great turn out of old & new members for the event!
Our extensively knowledgeable tour guide, Steve!

Steve has worked at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel for 20+ years and you can tell he just loves it! He told us so many stories about the hotel and each room we visited. He even brought his own materials to share with us! If you stop by, keep an eye out for him in the Lobby/public areas and feel free to ask him some questions about the hotel.
Our 1+ hour tour was absolutely amazing and everyone enjoyed it! We can't wait to return to the hotel for more Happy Hours, afternoon tea, and next year's tree lighting ceremony!

Badmaash – “Bad Ass” Indian Gastropub

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 11am, I checked the DTLA Rendezvous Twitter feed and came across Badmaash's announcement of their soft opening for lunch.  I had been meaning to go there to check out the new Indian-Gastropub in DTLA, so I immediately text my friend, Humpty, Founder of Interwoven L.A., to see if he was free for lunch.  We both had a few errands to finish first, but the lunch-date was set!

We arrived at Badmaash around 1pm and found one of the owners, Nakul, sitting outside having a quick break.  He warmly greeted us and walked us in. The place had a good crowd for their soft opening and amongst the seating that was left, Humpty and I agreed to take the counter seats, which, for this luncheon, were the best seats in the house!

(Photos were taken after our leisure-lunch after the lunch-crowd dissipated.)

Seated at the counter, we had the pleasure to chat with owners and brothers, Nakul and Arjun, and, as Humpty put it, "It was like eating with family."  In between the brothers running out food and checking in on other guests, we chatted about Badmaash, it's name, the food, and their appreciation for food.

Badmaash, which can be translated to "bad-ass", takes traditional Indian recipes and updates them.  Their dishes start with quality ingredients that are local, organic, and sustainable (where possible) and, instead of cooking them the traditional Indian way, their professionally trained executive chef, who's also their father, translates them using French techniques.  What you get is very flavorful and modern flair.

Their lunch menu will be limited and rotating.

I had the Masala Chickpeas.

Humpty had the Lamb Vindaloo.

Both were served on a delicate bed of basmati rice, very tasty, and went well with an ice cold beer - they have over 10 that you can choose from!

Your bill will be served in one of their many tobacco cans.

Additional seating for about 20 upstairs.

I can' t wait to return to try their full dinner menu and to see the family again!
